Mixing these was also a fun challenge - the dialogue was very echo-ey, noisy and muffled, so I got to give Izotope’s RX noise reduction tools a good workout. I started with music, composing a couple of fluid movements that rely on a mix of organic and inorganic sounds. Being a musician at heart, my favorite moments in sound design happen when the line between "timed sound effect" and "music" gets blurred, and this video is full of those moments where the music catches a motion or a hit so that an added sound effect doesn't really have to. I took inspiration from Samurai Jack, one of my all-time favorite pieces of media, for the synthesized sounds that border on sound effect and sneak the concept of AI into this otherwise bucolic animation. Then, I designed a tempo grid based on the speed of the clock ticking, and designed the rest of the sound effects and foley for the video so that they followed the grid. The result is a subtly musical soundscape inspired by some of the backing tracks from the Bjork movie Dancer in the Dark.
